MEMRISTOR

Science and technology, once even not known that it will revolutionize the world, now has become integral part of the life. With the advancement, now it has started competing human brain, which is AI (Artificial Intelligence).

Now one more device "MEMRISTOR" has been developed which is a microscopic component that can "remember" electrical states even when turned off. This was a theoretical concept till now since 1971. This will be far cheaper and faster than the flash drive and also will be more reliable. The device has been built and processed in labs. It can be used to make flash drive, RAM, hard drive and any other storage device in the coming years.

Few of the features it can have are:

1) Many Tera Bytes of storage
2) Used for AI
3) Improved battery life
4) Instant on PCs
5) Remember data without any power

The data stored in the device will be stored as it is and once turned on, it will be in the same state it was turned off; memorizing the state when it was turned off. So, this will reduce power consumption, delay in boot, and thus increase the speed, reduce the cost. Eventually, it will reduce the size and cost of the computers and will be convenient to carry.

As the device will work with a dynamic range of data states in an analog mode, computer and devices based on Memristor would be able to perform many more complex tasks, rather than just computing with 0s & 1s.

Seeing the benefit, HP has started working on computer that will use this device. So, if HP goes on his target of 2012, we will have a system which has this device instead of flash memory. By 2014-16, even the hard drive and DRAM will be replace by Memristor. But to have a complete computer which are analog based we will have to wait for another 20 years.

10 Mobile Broadband Myths

Mobile broadband though being one of the most discussed topics in past 12 months, the technology has not been understood much. Many people today uses broadband on mobile without much knowledge about the technology.

Jessica McArdle, marketing manager, Top 10 Broadband, says: "We wanted to put myths surrounding excessive costs and slow speeds to bed. Mobile broadband download costs are down to an all-time low of £1 per Gb and download speeds are coming in at an average of 2.62Mb – we think it's time to set the record straight on mobile broadband."

The top 10 myths which are there in the broadband users' minds are discussed here:

1) Download allowances are insufficient.
Not so. Although 1GB deals are still around and are indeed limiting for users, these are now far from the norm.

Also, the research shows on an average an user uses just 1.2 MB of his download limit.

2) Mobile broadband is much slower than home broadband.
Vodafone provides average broadband speed of 2.62 MB which compares well with fixed line connection providing 3.5 MB. Users can use Opra Turbo browser to increase the broadband speed.

3) Mobile broadband laptop deals are a rip-off.
While it’s true that buying a laptop and broadband separately usually works out cheaper, compared with other credit/hire purchase deals laptop offers are actually very keenly priced.

Nokia Ovi Store

Now Nokia has started his online mobile store. Ovi Store

This store brings third party application to Nokia mobile. Like other mobile store, it lets users download games, utilities, music, videos, ring tones, social network, entertainment, etc. Even user has option to search using the keywords. The store has even "Recommended" section specific to location, model.

The store has both the free as well as paid software. Now, you can even add your own application to the store. The store has lots of free application available.

As the store provides platform for developer community to sell their products and users can avail the software for free, Nokia has great potential to grow like Apple App Store.

The store has to develop to let users download application for all the Nokia models. This will definitely happen as more and more developer start developing software. User can select model specific software from the store.
Ovi store will be surely a hit for Nokia fan as they will be able to get many application at one place. As the store is still new and it is still facing initial hiccups, like applications are shown twice and while searching using keywords, same results are displayed twice.

When user will click on first item, it will take you to the file. However, when user will click on the second one, it will give an error, "Sorry, this item is no longer available." This initial hiccups will surely be cleared by Nokia and the store will turn out to be happy note for Nokia users.

Now, cellphones with 3D screens

Simulating 3D has been something of a Holy Grail for cinema and TV. But that is set to change with mobile devices, which are expected to come with simpler and cheaper 3D technology.

Rudimentary 3D technologies have been around practically since the dawn of filmmaking.

The first ever attempt came in 1890, when the British film pioneer William Friese-Greene invented a process in which two films were projected side by side on screen, and the viewer looked through a stereoscope to converge the two images.

We've come a long way since this bulky and impractical solution, yet 3D film and TV is still some way from becoming an everyday reality, partly due to cost. But that looks set to change, and mobile devices - with simpler and hence cheaper 3D technology - could well lead the charge. TOI

iPod iPhone shock

Until now we were just shocked by the cost of iPhone in India, now we will be shocked by the headphones used. Apple has warned of possible mild electrical shocks from headphones used with iPod and iPhone.

Apple has warned that people staying in those area were the air is very dry, while using headphones with iPod or iPhones they could experience electrical shocks.

A post in Apple website says, "
"It's possible to receive a small and quick electrical (static) shock from your ear buds while listening to iPod or iPhone." "Receiving a static shock from a pair of ear buds does not necessarily indicate an issue with the iPod, iPhone, or ear buds," the statement noted. TOI

Surfing with 1 to 10 gigabits per second can be possible

If we can believe in BBC News, we are not far from that day when we can have broadband with the speed of 1 to 10 GB/Sec. UK Government has already invested £1m to develop the technology. The new technology is to do with fiber optics. Also, government is trying to ensure it is cheap to reach the common people. The government has started funding 13 projects aiming to make it cheap and easier for the people.

Technology Strategy Board (TSB) has been funded for the same which would aim in creating this "ultra fast" broadband technology. It will also help other firms in UK join larger European projects which aim in boosting broadband speed.

"There's a Moore's Law for bandwidth in the home," said Mike Biddle, a lead technologist for the TSB. "It's doubling roughly every 21 months."

"If you look out to 2020 you start to need about 1 gigabit per second (gbps) and beyond," he added.

"Although you can already get 1 or 10gbps you cannot do it at the right cost point," he said. "That's the barrier we are trying to crack." (BBC)

Five Dimensional Recording DVDs

Now you can record 1.6 terabytes of data in one single DVD type disc. Thus, you can have 300 DVDs in one single disc.

A new optical recording method could pave the way for data discs with 300 times the storage capacity of standard DVDs, Nature journal reports..... (More)

The DVD will cost just under $0.05. The technology used is that of one of the properties of gold, "nano-rods" by manipulating the light pointed at them. A group of scientist from
Swinburne University of Technology Australia have developed this DVDs which exploit the property of gold to write data.

They say they were able to introduce a spectral - or colour - dimension and a polarisation dimension, as well as recording information in 10 layers of the nano-rod films, adding a third spatial dimension.
